Looking for Canucks news?

If there were ever a player whose short list I would want the Vancouver Canucks to be on, it would be Shane Doan’s.

Earlier today Doan’s agent Terry Bross confirmed to Vancouver radio station CKWX, News 1130 sports that the Coyotes captain has spoken to the Vancouver Canucks and they’re on his list of desired destinations.

Earlier today it was also reported by Sarah McLellan (@AZC_McLellan) of azcentral.com that Doan was indeed taking calls and listening to what teams had to offer.

“I expect by Tuesday we’ll probably start listening to some offers, get an idea of where he kind of fits in the market, and take that next step,” said Terry Bross, Doan’s agent. “I wouldn’t say anything’s imminent.”

Doan, 35, is still hoping to return to the Coyotes should there be any resolve to the franchises’ ownership woes. However, it’s safe to assume that Doan is looking to join a team capable of competing for a championship.

“There have been as many as 11 teams that have inquired about the services of the Coyotes captain since July 1st, but staying in Phoenix remains the priority”

Bross also said that he’s had some regular conversations with Phoenix GM Don Maloney regarding one or multiple year contracts with the team.

The “BC Connection”

Vancouver is in an interesting position and there are a few things of note that could draw Doan to play in Vancouver other than the chance to win. Doan’s wife is from the Kamloops area.

The Doan family spends time in the off-season there.

He’s part owner of the Kamloops Blazers.

Shane Doan

Shane Doan embodies a lot of the qualities that the Canucks are looking for in a player

It should also be noted that Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman has a relationship with Doan from his time as a part of the Jets/Coyotes organization.

If the Canucks were able to sign Doan to a contract it would certainly eliminate the need for Vancouver to rush into a trade for a top six forward.

I seriously hope they’re not just kicking tires with him either, but trying to beat down the door to get to him.

Shane Doan embodies a lot of the qualities that the Canucks are looking for in a player, as well as a person.

Shane Doan is also one of those players that will work his butt off, night in, night out.

He’s big, he hits, he can score and when he has to, he’ll fight. Above all that he’s a leader and a quality one. He can be the top six forward to play with Kesler and whoever else gets the chance, between David Booth and Mason Raymond.

One thing that has worked well in Doan’s favor throughout his career is his lack of injuries. He’s only missed 10 games in the last 13 seasons, not including playoffs.

On top of all of that, he’s size and presence would certainly be a boon to the power play.

It gives you that option to move Ryan Kesler back to center and putting him on the second unit, giving it more life.

Like I said, for all those reasons, if I’m Vancouver and I know there’s mutual interest, I’m kicking the door down to sign Shane Doan.
